The Office of the Attorney General for the District of Columbia is one of the largest and most diverse government legal offices in the country. The Office is statutorily responsible for conducting all the legal business of the District of Columbia government including all lawsuits initiated by or against it. The Office currently employs over 240 attorneys and nearly 100 attorneys dispersed throughout the subordinate agencies. Presently, there are 8 divisions that handle thousands of legal matters every year ranging from appellate matters; diverse civil and criminal litigation in the local and federal courts; affirmative litigation in the areas of tax fraud, welfare fraud, and consumer protection; to providing legal advise and opinions for executive branch agencies and their officials. Unlike states, which have multiple jurisdictional layers and corresponding legal offices at the state, county and municipal levels, the legal activities of the District government, in large measure, are the responsibility of the Attorney General’s Office.
