Youth Service America (YSA) – the global organization that improves communities by increasing the number and the diversity of young people serving in substantive roles – is seeking an intern to assist the Vice President of Engagement in writing a book for parents that demonstrates effective strategies for raising children that change the world through service.
YSA expects to publish this book for a mass market audience with several goals in mind: 1) share YSA’s considerable expertise in engaging youth that address the world’s most pressing problems (climate change, literacy, global health, etc.), 2) raise YSA’s visibility and credibility as a resource for parents, and 3) pilot an earned-income source of revenue to fund YSA’s programs.Applicant may be a graduate or advanced undergraduate student and should be able to commit to approximately 20 hours / week. This intern position is non-paid; YSA is dedicated to providing a valuable internship experience through substantive work projects, exposure to the non-profit field, and recognition in the final copy of the book. Offices are conveniently located nearby the McPherson Square metro station.
Responsibilities will include:
• Coordinate interviews with parents
• Conduct/transcribe interviews
• Identify and write about common themes
• Adapt descriptions of YSA’s knowledge and experience to augment content
• Assist YSA Communications department in gaining support from publishers
• Other duties as assigned by the Vice President of EngagementKnowledge of youth service issues and formal writing experience are helpful but not required.
