The AIDS Foundation of Chicago (AFC) is seeking a creative and motivated individual to intern in its Policy Department with the Pride Action Tank. This is an excellent opportunity to gain practical experience while working at an active, upbeat non-profit.The Pride Action Tank Intern will directly work with the Pride Action Tank team and learn about a wide range of projects, including the Chicago Restroom Access Project, education and outreach for various projects, exploring new housing models and other pop-up projects. The Pride Action Tank Intern will also have the opportunity to learn about HIV/AIDS prevention, care and advocacy, and other issues related to AFC’s mission.
This person will work closely with the Pride Action Tank Executive Director and Project Coordinator.
This internship is designed to be both educational and practical. In this position, the intern will learn how to take skills acquired in the educational setting and apply them in a professional setting. Upon completion of this internship, the Pride Action Tank Intern should have an understanding of LGBTQ+ programs and issues, with a focus on transgender people, and the role policy and advocacy play in the nonprofit setting.
The Pride Action Tank Intern will learn:
Best practices in social media with an advocacy lens
Broad issues within the LGBTQ+ community
Project tracking and time management
Research and note taking methods and skills
Nonprofit and organizational systems
Qualifications:
Current or recent enrollment in a graduate or undergraduate degree program with an interest and aptitude to work in public health, communications and public policy.
Interest in and familiarity with the transgender community and LGBTQ issues.
Interest in social justice.
Able to work independently, and to also work in a collaborative environment.
Excellent written and verbal communications skills.
Proficient with Microsoft Office, including Word, Excel and PowerPoint.
Prior experience and proficiency working with social media platforms.
Enjoy working with the public in community settings.
Must be flexible and open to new opportunities to engage a variety of stakeholders.
Experience with and proficiency in Word, Excel, and social media platforms.
